Day 2: Journey to the Heart of Mundari Land & Festival Immersion (Monday, January 12, 2026 – Festival Day!)

In the Morning after an early breakfast, we embark on an exhilarating 4×4 journey into the South Sudanese bush, heading towards the traditional lands of the Mundari. The drive takes us approximately 75 kilometers north of Juba, centered around the town of Terekeka. Along the way, we shall pass through small rural villages, offering glimpses into daily life.

At Mid-Day Upon reaching the Mundari tribal territory near Terekeka, we shall make a stop at the local market, a bustling hub where you can meet the first Mundari people and observe their vibrant trade.

After obtaining necessary local permits and a respectful introduction, we shall proceed to a designated Mundari cattle camp.

In the Evening, Festival Highlights! This is where the magic truly begins. We shall be welcomed by the local chief and granted access to the camp, immersing ourselves in the full swing of the Mundari Festival. Witness the incredible bond between the Mundari and their Ankole-Watusi cattle as the herders return to the camp at sunset. Experience the mesmerizing sight of bonfires creating a smoky mist, used to repel insects and create an almost ethereal glow over the camp. You will observe traditional practices like the application of ash to cattle, the unique grooming rituals, and potentially even participate in some communal activities. As the sun sets, be prepared for a photographic spectacle unlike any other.

 

Dinner will be enjoyed right within the Mundari camp, offering an unparalleled opportunity to engage with the Mundari people, share stories (with the help of your guide), and truly understand them customs. We will camp overnight right next to the Mundari camp in specially prepared tents, allowing you to experience the authentic sounds and atmosphere of their unique nighttime rituals.
